MAASAI COLLECTION BY STACY BAYNE

Since I was a little girl I have lived this day in my heart many times. I have been given my entente, my wedding necklace, by my mother and her friends. I cry out my grief at having to leave my family engaged. Now I must walk forward to my future not looking back, as I might turn to stone for my sadness. But in my heart there is a growing seed of excitement. . . as my new husband helps me forward to my new home. I will be en-kirotet, his favorite wife..
Keeper Of Fortune
I am a Maasai son and I care for my familys herd. My stick, which I use for herding, is sharpened at the tip to represent the warriors spear- which one day I will carry. I know my herd well and I noticed a missing cow the way I would an absent friend. Soon I will enter Emorata, the ceremony initiating me into warrior hood, and a sacrificial ox or bullock will mark that day.
"I am a daughter of Africa and I am proud of my birthright and heritage."
"I am the ol-payian, the junior elder - the father. Warrior hood was exciting but I was pleased to become an elder even though I had to have my head shaved. Now I have married and am privileged to be able to take part in tribal discussions."
I was born to make this journey and the footsteps of my heart have walked this way before. I am a Maasai bride and this is my wedding day. The path upon which I tread is symbolic delivering me from my past into my future. The way before me is swept clear as I look forward to a life of devotion to my husband.
"I am en-tito, a Maasai maiden. I am not yet eligble to marry so I spend much of my time creating my magnificent beadwork and making myself pretty for the moran - the warrios. I have mixed ochre in the mixing bowl and I am going to help my friend decorate herself with it and then she in turn will help me in turn. I am enjoying being free and feeling the admiring glances of the warriors."
